Emotions

Recognising and managing your emotional state is important if you are going develop strategies to remain a resilient, calm collected leader. As important, is being able to identify the emotions of others and modify your behaviour accordingly, particularly if we have triggers that can cause you to think and behave in a certain way. Research shows us that those with strong social support networks are likely to be more resilient and bounce back from setbacks better too.

Mindset

Adopting the right mindset helps us to be more resilient. Getting a sense of perspective, being optimistic and seeing challenges as opportunities as opposed to threats are all helpful in maintaining resilience. Also important is discipline around focus, prioritisation and goal setting.

Meaning

Understanding your purpose – why you do what you do – is crucial to being resilient. Knowing and being true to your core values is also key. If we are able to align what we do with our purpose and values, we are more likely to be persistent in pursuit of our goals and resilient to the challenges we face.

Energy

We only have finite reserves of energy, so managing these resources so that we can peak at the right times and work at the pace required is very important. We need to be proactive about the way we integrate sleep, healthy eating and exercise into our routine, as well as being aware of the things that drain us (and avoiding them where possible).

Leadership

As leaders we need to set the climate whereby people can be resilient. This is more than just being a role model to all the above, it is also creating an environment of psychological safety where people feel they can be their authentic selves, are not afraid to fail and get the necessary support and challenge to succeed.
